What is Parts Work?
We all have dozens of "parts" within us. (This is not the same thing as Multiple Personality Disorder or "DID".) I like to visualize these parts as living in their own separate bubbles containing their own unique sets of feelings, ideas, and beliefs about the way the world works. Sometimes these parts don't agree, which causes internal conflict and confusion. The parts often argue with each other in our minds, vying to get heard, and to be seen as right. This arguing causes stress and emotional confusion, leading us to feel we don't know which way to turn. We may end up feeling despair, like there simply is no answer to our pain, and no resolution for our pasts.
The fact is - there are NO BAD or WRONG PARTS. Even though they may cause us to feel very uncomfortable, in reality, they are all just trying to help us deal with whatever life threw at us in the past. Each one of these parts may be stuck in an old memory. Most were formed to help us cope with intolerable situations earlier in life. The problem is that some of these parts are inadvertently causing problems for us in the present - in the form of unwanted behaviors, self-sabotage, stories that loop in the mind, intrusive thoughts, and unresolvable pain.
When you practice "Parts Work" with your therapist, you change your neurobiology as well as your physiology. The nervous system shifts from "fight or flight" to "rest and digest". This isn't just about feeling calmer. When we give our separate parts the understanding, compassion, and healing they need, it causes permanent change within the psyche and the body. Your priorities will suddenly shift. Thoughts that hijacked you so often before, suddenly loosen their grip on you. You'll be able to pursue life more authentically and with more curiosity. There's a feeling of freedom from emotional burden. Once these parts are cared for and sorted, you'll feel much more aligned with your true self.
Real change happens, not through talking about problems incessantly, and not through force, but through TRANSFORMATION.
I LOVE this work! I use it for my own personal healing, and with my own therapist. After a lifetime of searching for healing modalities that really work - IFS, or "Parts Work" has proven that it's the fastest and clearest path to healing a lifetime of trauma and pain.
